George White's Scandals (1934) DVD available
Alice Faye made her film debut in this scandalous pre code musical. Producer White has to deal with crooner Rudy Vallee, Faye, a goofy Jimmy Durante, and Cliff Edwards in between the wild music numbers. Some of the numbers like Durante's blackface bit are shocking today. Quality is a bit lesser on this one, note there are blips in the sound midway through the film.

George White's 1935 Scandals (1935) DVD available
Followup to the 1934 Scandals has impressario George White discovering Alice Faye and James Dunn and propelling them to Broadway stardom, only to see success go to their heads. Also starring Ned Sparks, Cliff Edwards, Lyda Roberti. Early appearance by Eleanor Powell. Excellent quality.

One of O & J's best films has the duo as nightclub entertainers who aid a southern colonel and his daughters with the ghosts of a gay 90s playboy, a horse, and a cow! Also starring Gloria Jean and Martha O'Driscoll. Decent but not great quality.

Gigot (1962) DVD available
Jackie Gleason stars as a deaf mute janitor who takes in a young girl (Katharine Kath) when her mother dies. Sentimental and well acted drama set it Paris directed by Gene Kelly. Gleason is excellent, even if he doesn't say a word. Great quality.

Excellent romantic comedy stars Claudette Colbert as a working girl whose romance with blueblood Ray Milland becomes fodder for her best friend (Fred MacMurray), a reporter who catapults her to notoriety. Also starring C. Aubrey Smith. Decent quality.

The famed Gershwin musical is now a W & W vehicle. The boys travel to Arizona to help playboy Eddie Quillan with his dude ranch and run afoul of badman Stanley Fields. Also starring Dorothy Lee. Songs include "I Got Rhythm" and "But Not For Me." Excellent quality.

Hilarious pre code comedy stars Kay Francis and Lilyan Tashman as two gold diggers hired to put the moves on a rich spendthrift (Eugene Pallette) and his business associate (Joel McCrea)...but Francis starts actually falling for McCrea. Note: Quality isn't real good on this one, mainly for completists.

George Raft stars in the first adaptation of Dashiel Hammett's novel. Raft is a right hand man to a powerful politician (Edward Arnold) who is implicated in a murder scandal and tries to uncover the facts. Also starring Claire Dodd and Ray Milland. Quality isn't all that great, a bit dark.

Great film adaptation of Tennessee Williams's classic play stars Jane Wyman as a shy clubfooted girl, Arthur Kennedy as her frustrated brother, and Gertrude Lawrence as the southern belle mother. Kirk Douglas is the gentleman caller who comes over for dinner. Excellent quality.

Fun early talkie comedy stars Winnie Lightner as a gold digger who recruits the help of her salesmen ex husbands (Olsen and Johnson) to help her land a rich millionaire (Claude Gillingwater). Lots of risque jokes and a good chase finale. Excellent quality.

Entertaining biography of 1800s showgirl Lotta Crabtree (Mitzi Gaynor), who wows the California mining towns and later San Francisco. Dale Robertson costars as a Confederate army spy in love with Lotta. Also starring Dennis Day and Una Merkel. Excellent quality.

The Greed of William Hart (1948) DVD available
Tod Slaughter's last horror drama is a thinly veiled version of the Burke and Hare body snatching story. Slaughter is Hart and Henry Oscar also stars as Moore, stealing or killing to supply a crooked doctor (Arnold Bell) with bodies for dissection. Note: This is the 53m version, not the best quality.
