Revolutionary early talkie from Rouben Mamoulian stars Gary Cooper as a carnival worker who gets drawn into the mob when his girlfriend (Sylvia sidney) has to do jail time. Also starring Paul Lukas and Guy Kibbee. Quality is blurry on this one.

Paramount On Parade (1930) DVD available
Considered the best early talkie studio revue, the entire Paramount roster is featured. Jack Oakie, Leon Errol, and Skeets Gallagher host and the stars include Maurice Chevalier (3 segments), and a hilarious mystery with Dr. Fu- Manchu (Warner Oland), Philo Vance (William Powell), and Sherlock Holmes (Clive Brook). This is a 79m reissue, not the 102m original, and there are some blips from time to time.

Devil and the Deep (1932) DVD available
Wildly over the top melodrama stars Tallulah Bankhead as a much put upon wife of a crazed submarine commander (Charles Laughton), raising his ire when she falls in love with the new lieutenant (Gary Cooper). Also starring a young Cary Grant as Tallulah's previous man on the side. Pretty decent quality.
