Swanee River (1939) DVD available
Entertaining (if totally fictionalized) musical biopic of composer Stephen
Foster, chronicling his early years as a struggling composer, his marriage
to a southern belle (Andrea Leeds), and his down years as he becomes an
alcoholic once the Civil War hits. Also starring Al Jolson as charismatic
minstrel E.P. Christy. Very good quality.

Excellent Fox musical stars Alice Faye as a lousy playwright who finds
that her serious drama only works as a musical comedy. Also starring
